Here he is, the great and powerful OZ, the wizard himself.... Frank Morgan.
Born Frank Phillip Wuppermann on June 1, 1890 in New York City, died September 18, 1949 in Beverly Hills California of a heart attack.
In the 1930s, MGM was so impressed with him that they signed him to a lifetime contract. Nominated for the Best Actor award in 1934. Nominated for the Best Supporting Actor in 1942. But of course, his most famous performance was as the Wizard in The Wizard of OZ. He also appeared in over 100 movies.
This black and white photo measures 7 by 8.75 inches. The photo does not have a date on it. Since he died in 1949, I'm fairly sure this photo is from the early to mid 1940s.
This is not a copy or a reproduction, its the real thing! It is signed, autographed on the front "To Erling with many thanks for those wonderful ???? and that sweet whipping cream. –I said whipping, son". It is then signed Frank Morgan. NOTE – where I have the question marks is a word I can't make out.
The back was marked M-G-M Photo by Clarence ????" (Can’t read the last name).
I do not have a certificate of authenticity. I did compare the signature with several dozen that I found online and it is a match.
I have about a dozen autographed photos of movie stars of the 1940s to 1950s. They are all autographed to this person named Erling. Somewhere around here, I have Erling's last name and will update this listing when I locate it. I do know that Erling was an inventor in the skiing industry and was very well known in that industry and around Hollywood.
CONDITION:
-On the front, just to the right of his nose, there is a small scratch.
-On the back, there is the remains of a small bead of glue around the outer edges that was applied years ago.
-There are no pin holes or tape marks. It is unframed.
All in all, I would say the picture is in great condition. I'm not an expert in the field of autographed photos, but those are my observations.
